Table of content
1. What is crochet?
Crochet, originating from the French word “crochet,” meaning “hook,” refers to a tool with a hooked end used to loop strands of yarn together. This technique is utilized to create various textile products such as clothing, accessories, and especially adorable stuffed animals known as amigurumi.
2. Why you should learn crochet?
There are many reasons to start with crochet:
- Stress Relief and Relaxation: The repetitive and consistent motions of crocheting can help alleviate stress, providing a sense of calm after a long day.
- Unlimited Creativity: Crochet allows you to unleash your creativity with countless patterns and designs, ranging from simple to intricate.
- Cost-Effective and Accessible: You only need a few basic tools to get started, and they are easy to find and affordable, making crochet an accessible hobby.
3. Essential tools for beginners
Before diving into learning crochet, make sure you have the following basic tools ready:
- Crochet Hook: Crochet hooks come in various sizes and materials, from plastic to metal or wood. Choose a hook that suits the type of yarn you’ll be using.
- Yarn: There are many types of yarn with different colors, thicknesses, and materials. Select the yarn that best fits your project.
- Scissors: A small pair of scissors for cutting yarn when needed.
- Tapestry Needle: Used for weaving in loose ends after finishing your project.
- Stitch Markers: These are very useful for keeping track of stitch counts, especially in more complex projects.

4. Basic techniques to get started
Before diving into larger projects, focus on learning the following basic techniques:
4.1 Slip knot and chain stitch:
These are the two most important techniques to master first. The slip knot is the initial step to start a chain, and the chain stitch is the foundation of every crochet pattern.
How to crochet a slip knot:
- Step 1: Create a Loop
- Step 2: Insert the Hook
- Step 3: Pull the Yarn Through
- Step 4: Tighten the Loop
- Step 5: Begin Your Crochet
This simple knot is the foundation for starting many crochet projects!
How to crochet a chain stitch
- Step 1: Create a slip knot on your crochet hook or, in my example, start a chain for the next row.
- Step 2: Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front.
- Step 3: Pull the yarn through the loop on the hook. You’ve just made your first chain stitch.
- Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create the desired number of chain stitches.
4.2 Basic crochet stitches:
Slip stitch (Slst): Used to join stitches or create borders.
How to crochet a slip stitch:
- Step 1: Insert the hook into the next stitch.
- Step 2: Yarn over and pull through both the stitch and the loop on the hook. You’ve just completed a slip stitch.
Single crochet stitch (Sc): A basic crochet stitch used in various projects.
Note: When yarning over, you should yarn over from front to back for a neater single crochet stitch.
How to make a single crochet stitch:
- Step 1: Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook (do not count the loop on the hook).
- Step 2: Yarn over by bringing the yarn from front to back.
- Step 3: Pull the yarn through the chain, leaving two loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook. You’ve just completed a single crochet stitch.
Increase stitch (Inc): A technique used to add stitches in a row or round to create a wider shape.
How to crochet a increase stitch:
To increase stitches, crochet two (or more) stitches into the same chain or stitch from the previous row.
For example, you can crochet two single crochet stitches into the same stitch to create an increase.
Decrease stitch (Dec): A technique used to reduce stitches in a row or round to narrow the shape.
How to crochet a decrease stitch:
- Step 1: Insert the hook through the front loop of the first stitch.
- Step 2: Insert the hook through the front loop of the second stitch.
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. You have completed a decrease stitch.
Half double crochet stitch (HDC): This stitch creates a thicker texture than the single crochet.
How to make a half double crochet stitch:
- Step 1: Yarn over the hook.
- Step 2: Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through the stitch, leaving three loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over again and pull through all three loops on the hook at once. You’ve just completed a half double crochet stitch.
Double crochet stitch (DC): This stitch is taller and is often used for patterns that require more coverage.
How to make a double crochet stitch:
- Step 1: Yarn over the hook.
- Step 2: Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through the stitch, leaving three loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook, leaving two loops remaining.
- Step 5: Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook. You’ve just completed a double crochet stitch.
Triple crochet stitch (TC): The tallest crochet stitch, ideal for projects requiring wide spacing between stitches.
How to make a triple crochet stitch:
- Step 1: Yarn over the hook twice.
- Step 2: Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through the stitch, leaving four loops on the hook.
- Step 4: Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook.
- Step 5: Yarn over and pull through the next two loops.
- Step 6: Yarn over and pull through the final two loops on the hook. You’ve just completed a triple crochet stitch.
